ALL domestic United Airlines flights GROUNDED!

All– I said ALL!– United Airlines domestic flights grounded by computer outage:

All of United Airlines’ domestic flights were grounded Sunday night because of a computer outage, the Federal Aviation Administration said as scores of angry travelers sounded off on social media.

International flights weren’t affected by the ground stop, which the FAA said was issued at United’s request.

The ground stop initially was scheduled to end at 8 p.m., but United tweeted at 8:06 that it was still “working on a resolution.” The FAA later extended the ground stop to 9 p.m. ET.

Reality vs fiction..

Reality is scarier than fiction.. that is exemplified in a documentary that you may be interested on NETFLIX called KILLER LEGENDS. you may learn something new.. and despite the fact no candy was ever poisoned on Halloween, the "CANDY MAN" section will still give you enough pause to check your kids' candy anyway..

I recommend the documentary for those interested in true crimes and urban legends.. this brings to light the reasons why we are freaked by hook hands, by masked killers.. and quite frankly, by people.

Among the things you may learn that you didn't know previously includes--besides no candy ever being poisoned for trick or treaters--are these facts: No babysitter killings ever happened in big numbers.. despite a number of movies being made showcasing it. The Texarkana killings are creepy--and even more creepy may be the yearly film festival showing THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN on a location where a grisly murder took place with the movie based in part on it..

And so many others.

Urban legends.

They all come from somewhere..

The other worldly nature of horror movies are not nearly as scary as the darkest minds and hearts of evil men who perpetrate evil and murder the innocent.

KILLER LEGENDS is scary for that reason..

THE 'PLUMBING OF WALMART' CONSPIRACY THEORIES

Six Walmarts closing all at the same time in different cities. For six months.
And 'plumbing issues' were blamed..

Employees given no warnings.. shelves were completely stocked. Just five hours notice was given at a California location..

And as you can imagine, countless conspiracy theories are abounding all across the Internet..
This video summarizes things quite well:

This is a little creepy if I saw so myself..

A few news articles, mostly local, are picking this story up at this point.
One article posted on Tulsa's CHANNEL 8 about how the closing has come as a surprise.. they sum it up this way:

The Walmart on Admiral and Memorial Drive closed for repairs Monday night. Tuesday afternoon, customers were still trying to get in.
The message about the repairs may not have made it to all the customers, but for employees like Dane Humphreys, it was loud and clear.
"There are a lot of things that don't seem right to me," said Humphreys.
No it does not seem right.

Water wars coming. The next crime wave is predicted

I recall a documentary I saw back in the late 1990s, it was some sort of bad TV special--bad in acting and producing--that predicted what the next fifty or so years of life may be like. Some talked about Nostrodamus, others just predicted based off of scientific research. One particular thing stuck in my mind: The possibility of 'waters wars,' with shortages and droughts people would be forced to fight and become adversaries just for a drop of liquid.

Someone mixed the Teletubbies with the opening of AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Fright ensues.

Though some may say the actual Teletubbies are more frightening..

If anyone wants a real scare, look no further than reality

Namely this documentary on Netflix: FORGOTTEN PLANET: ABANDONED AMERICA. It’s another example of why reality scares me much more profoundly than any work of fiction.

The documentary isn’t new.. But as a busy adult, I only watch things when I get the chance.. It was produced in 2011, and is a graphic account of how once booming towns in the United States often become abandoned ghost towns.

There is something brutally frightening to me about decaying structures and silent facilities.. I have near me a hospital that was active for over one hundred years, and now sits idle as bankruptcy took the legs out from under the workers .. the building, in only two years, has become overgrown with the earth and is already appearing as though it was forsaken over a decade ago.. It’s so amazing to see how quickly our planet makes us forget people ever lived in certain spots. Abandoned buildings serve as a reminder: We are dust and so are the places we inhabit.. They’ll be gone just as we will.

Also near me:  Centralia, the town I grew up in and have written about extensively on my site. Anyone visiting that town wouldn’t even know that it was once filled with homes stacked on top of each other, taverns on every corner, and churches active every Sunday.. A mine fire swept away life and the earth, again, took over.

So give this 40 some minute documentary a chance—if you’re like me and chilled to the core by abandoned structures, try out FORGOTTEN PLANET: ABANDONED AMERICA.. turn off the lights.. lock the doors. The zombie is time. And it eats.

This is the trailer for ANNEBELLE, the prequel to the CONJURING by James Wan.

It looks highly disappointing. That’s an early judgement, perhaps too early.

Trailers aren’t everything..

This one was not.

Best I can tell, this is from the 4chan Paranormal board.. tried to ascertain if this is actually an age old paranormal tale, but cannot find much of anything online concerning it.

While I don’t necessarily believe the typed story that accompanies the picture, I can say this: If you look at the woman in the photo long enough, she does start to move.. Back and forth and back and forth—not enough for me to get the chills and believe someone is behind me as the snippet of text proclaims, but it’s still creepy nonetheless.

And I did initially look at it in the dark, which perhaps didn’t help.

While the image works well on a computer screen, it doesn’t translate well onto a phone screen. The bigger it is, the more it moves.

Which does mean, perhaps, a large painting of the girl would indeed really, really creep someone out who is lonely and staring at the image..

If anyone knows where the source of this is from, besides where I think it’s from, drop me at a line on the Open Lines page on my site..

And if you are one of those who experienced some of the worst that the text says you could, I offer my sincere apologies..

Wait.. stop.. LOOK BEHIND YOU!!

The slick world of Slenderman

I read a reaction to my story yesterday on the “Slenderman” attempted slaying.. the author of another site had some valid points I wanted to mention.. Here is the site and here is what was said:

1) “Slenderman Slaying” implies someone was actually slain, which they weren’t.

2) Two idiots do not make up for the rest of the mature world. Parents who think their little monsters are stupid enough to pull something like that need to start doing their own jobs, not blaming the horror genre.

3) Horror has been around since the dawn of time. Horror did not drive a pair of stupid children to try to commit a murder, peer pressure and utter idiocy did. Give these dolts a Stephen King book and the dictionary and they might’ve just grown up weird like everyone else.

Valid points to all three..

I think it somehow also misses the point of what I was trying to say about Slenderman..

Slenderman is a fictitious character created on SOMETHING AWFUL in 2009.  The website CREEPY PASTA is getting the majority of the attention since the stabbings in Wisconsin by two pre teen girls.. Today the creator of SLENDERMAN, Eric Knudsen, released a public statement expressing his sadness over the attempted murder..

What I am trying to say is this: Slenderman entered into the internet world as a meme. It has not become a part of our culture, our horror, and our paranormal tales. The fiction aside, people actually claim they see Slenderman. They think they saw him when they were children.. some claim that Slenderman is a symbol of creatures already created—memes of the past or tulpas from history, such as the men in black, or Jack from THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, or the gentlemen from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. In a sense, Slenderman does actually appear similar to mythological creatures that have been around for some time….

And enter this weird part: The attempted Slenderman slaying took place in a town called Waukesha Wisconsin. And there’s an interesting little factoid about what Waukesha means.. from the Loren Coleman blog COPY CAT EFFECT, this:

Waukesha: Over the years, many believed, incorrectly, that the origin of the name of the city was an Algonquian word meaning “fox” or “little foxes,” though it is actually an Anglicization of the Ojibwe proper name Waagoshag or the Potawatomi name Wau-tsha. Wau-tsha (sometimes written asWauk-tsha or Wauke-tsha) was the leader of the local tribe at the time of the first European settlement of the area. This is confirmed by accounts of Increase A. Lapham, an early settler and historian of the region. According to Lapham, the word for “fox” was pishtaka. Cutler also told visitors about Wau-tsha, who was described as “tall and athletic, proud in his bearing, dignified and friendly.”

(In appearance, Wau-tsha - without tentacles - sounds like Slender Man.)

Waukesha, Wisconsin has a long history of poltergeist, hauntings, and related stories. Also, the town was the epicenter for “phantom kangaroo” sightings in 1978, in Wisconsin.)

Yes, people who are experts in the occult or paranormal always have 20/20 hindsight.. they are able to put 2 and 2 together to equal 5, often ignoring logic and instead cutting through the veil that separates our reality from the esoteric reality around us.. But this strange paranormal history in this town gave me a bit of the creeps..

I also think back to Wes Craven’s NEW NIGHTMARE.. the plot being that Craven was nervous Freddy Kreuger was actually coming alive and entering into reality. While some may scoff at that idea, the notion is frightening to consider.

And now Slenderman has somehow come alive.

Yes, many are proclaiming that these two girls are using the Slenderman as an excuse for attempted murder..
But even if they are —or aren’t—what matters is that CNN, NBC, and other major news networks had Slenderman WITH HIS IMAGE as the top story for at least 12 hours yesterday.. The broadcast of Slenderman into the national conversation was done. He has entered the lexicon of our national conversation.

Monsters are just people.
Behaviors of monsters become known every day..

Even if Slenderman is fake, created, and a meme from 2009, the game seems to have changed. After all, Slenderman is now alive and darker than before—as the darkness gathers and we claim it is from the devil or evil, maybe the real fright is that we are just seeing humans for what they are. Dark and evil.. at the core diseased in moral, lacking faith..

Nietzsche claimed that GOD was dead. TIME magazine did, too.
Maybe someone needs to claim SLENDERMAN is alive.
Slenderman.. and every single evil bit of darkness that his tentacles represent.

The inner core of human beings exposed.. what are we? …slender in nature.. Dark in character.

Reality.

That is what scares me.

Life imitates fiction. Or reality. Or the collective reality that was created by fiction

Horror is not confined to movies and television shows anymore.. Lately, headlines of real events have been shaping up to be more frightening and disgusting than the tales of fiction.. One such headline comes from Wisconsin..

From what we know, a 12-year-old girl was stabbed 19 times in a wooded area of Milwaukee this weekend. Two other girls apparently lured her there.. after the stabbing, the 12-year-old crawled her bleeding body to her own rescue..

Someone riding a bike miraculously found her laying on the ground.

She is not dead. She is actually, again by a miracle of some sort, in stable condition.

But here is where things get a little creepy.

According to the police report, the girls who stabbed the other girl were compelled to do it after reading up on SLENDERMAN—the fictitious character that was created online as an experiment but somehow took on a life of its own.. people claim they see SLENDERMAN, hear him.. are haunted by him. But he only existed in contemporary paranormal circles. He was a creation. Some with an imagination think we created SLENDERMAN from nothing, an experiment gone haywire to the point that now he manifested like Freddy Kreuger..

But these girls took things further than others I have heard of.. According to the police, they were on CREEPYPASTA.. They said they were trying to get SLENDERMAN appear in their reality but that they had to kill someone first in order to summons him. Creepypasta has even been forced to respond to accusations that it fosters violence.. It most certainly does not. If you’ve never seen the site before, it’s primarily fiction literature.. it’s not meant to conjure up evil.. get a grip and understand reality before you point fingers at a website for doing absolutely nothing wrong.

Meanwhile…

Even more information is being revealed about their relationship to the would-be victim.. They had a sleepover with her Friday night. They attended the same school.. CNN is reporting this:

According to the criminal complaint, the suspects had been planning the attack since February.

They first thought to kill the victim by placing duct tape over her mouth while she was sleeping and stabbing her in the neck, the complaint read.

Next, the plan was to kill her in a bathroom where there was floor drain that could make cleanup easier, it continued.

But, finally, the girls decided to do it in a park while playing a game of hide-and-seek, the complaint read.

It states: “As they left for the park … (the victim) was walking in front of them and Geyser lifted up the left side of her white jacket and displayed the knife tucked in her waistband. Weier stated she gave Geyser a look with wide eyes and, when asked what that meant Weier stated, ‘I thought, dear god, this was really happening.’”

The girl was a ‘millimeter’ away from death as one stab wound was near her heart..

With this crime, I have read some parents and non parents clamoring for a ban on horror-related websites. You know, China and Australia style.. That would be difficult here in the free US of A with that pesky first amendment blocking censorship..

But with every passing day, each new website, and now the SLENDERMAN crime these two girls committed, SLENDERMAN is coming alive more and more.. he’s in the collective consciousness. He’s alive and well online. The paranormal entity took on a life of his own—and apparently is now inspiring crimes in his name..

This is disturbing and hopefully not a trend-setting moment..

12-year-olds need to be taught the separation of fact from fiction. A generation lost in space.. the kids aren’t alright.

Hacker hijacks baby monitor

This is a true story about modern technology turning very scary..

A Cincinnati Ohio family is learning firsthand how easy it can be to be hacked in our modern age.. FOX 19 reports this:

Heather Schreck was asleep around midnight in her Hebron home when a voice startled her.

"All of a sudden, I heard what sounded like a man’s voice but I was asleep so I wasn’t sure," Heather said.

Disoriented and confused, Heather picked up her cell phone to check the camera in her 10-month-old daughter Emma’s room. The camera was moving, but she wasn’t moving it.

"About the time I saw it moving, I also heard a voice again start screaming at my daughter. He was screaming, ‘Wake up baby. Wake up baby.’ Then just screaming at her trying to wake her up."

That’s when Heather’s husband, Adam, ran into Emma’s room. Adam said the camera then turned from his petrified daughter to point directly at him.

"Then it screamed at me," Adam said. "Some bad things, some obscenities. So I unplugged the camera."

But the Schrecks were only beginning to plug into the truth of what had just happened.

"Someone had hacked in from outside," Heather said.

A baby is the most prized and valued possession of a family. It’s urgently important for parents to constantly keep their children safe, sound, and protected.. The fact that someone can easily hack into a baby monitor and do something of this nature is in itself a very scary thing for a parent.

In some weird way, when I read this, it reminded me of that old story ‘the babysitter.’  A man was harrassing a babysitter by calling over and over again—the punchline came when the operator said “the call is coming from a telephone upstairs!”..  but involved 20th century technology. This new modern ‘hacking’ and thwacking than can occur may be even more frightening. At least in old tales of horror, we knew where the culprit was. In this age, we don’t. He can watch your child, or you, from your computer camera. Or in this case, a baby monitor.

A sense of security is important. When something happens to ruin it—as it did to Heather and Adam Schreck—your life can turn upside down. And you’ll realize how scary this world can be..

Pretty intense quake in LA

You can read more about it here

Also noteworthy is to see the Twitter reactions after experiencing the quake WHILE sitting in a theater watching NOAH

But as with any quake, there’s a 5% each one is a foreshock of another.. The 4.4 magnitude that occurred scared lots of people. This one did more to do that.

Remember it’s been years since LA had its last big one.. The mid 1990s as matter of fact.

Here we are, in a new century. Quake free.

That could be changing.

Although, I somewhat laughed at the “damage” photos being posted. The good news from the images is that it seems those most busy with the ‘cleanup’ will be stock boys in grocery stores—much much better than search and rescue teams combing rubble.

Horror Movie Studio: Staten Island Clown Was ‘Just A Joke’ - CBS New York

Staten Island Clown

We figured that this was just a fake tale to get attention for something. I don’t think the makers of the meme had an idea of just how fast the weird clown in Staten Island would spread..

But what boggles my mind is that the message was lost.. They are just advertising their horror studios, LENS PRODUCTION. For sure, you’d think they would have been trying to get a buzz about an actual project. Instead, it’s just a ploy to get attention for their studio.

Not sure if that idea was lost in the process.
I think more people would have assimilated to the clown hoax were it to be advertising a horror flick. But not a production company. Their name will be forgotten. A movie would not be..

BUT.. the clown will not be forgotten, either.

The ghostly winds are blowing at the Ellacoya Barn & Grille in New Hampshire

The ghostly winds are blowing at the Ellacoya Barn & Grille in New Hampshire

This is a piece of art from the Internet I found.. no clue as to its origins or who created it—I’d give credit if I knew. But I just love it.. Who DIDN’T feel like this as they walked into school classrooms each morning? And for those still in school who are reading this, I felt this way too. I fear my son, only age 3, will one day be thinking the same thoughts.. so often it feels like a big PINK FLOYD song as you go through your childhood. There seems to be so many adults who are dead set on ruining a kid’s dream or stomping down imagination.. There are teachers, parents, bus drivers, and principals who become a nightmare for children.. There are moments in time when living in childhood is a prison unto itself—where bullies thrive and hopes dive. But to those who read this facing the same hell of the brain: Be strong. School will one day be out forever. And when you’re 15 years post high school graduation, the good memories may remain and the bad will shrink.. Some of them.

But I also say this, to those who are reading this right now being bullied: You don’t have to be the victim. You’re better than the bully.. you’re smarter.. you’re more intelligent. And you’re more honest with yourself. Be as strong as you can be, don’t allow the darkness of sadness creep in, it’s not worth it. And more than anything else, don’t ever lose who you are.. then a bully wins. I’ve been down paths similar.. And it’s rough. But after the storm passes you’ll see how beautiful the sun can be..
I fear future moments with my own child.. I fear what other kids—and adults—are capable of. Having a child changed everything, and continues to do so.. E V E R Y T H I N G.

This TV movie, WITHOUT WARNING, scared me to hell when I was 14 years old.

I re-watched again tonight for some reason after I read that an enormous asteroid was zipping between the earth and the moon tonight. As a matter of fact, the 100 feet wide asteroid will be closer than the moon.. Thankfully so, because 100 feet of an asteroid hitting this planet would be awful.

So…in the safety (for now) of your home, sit back, grab some popcorn, and watch the movie beamed from YouTube to your computer screen or smart phone… as the asteroid zips by the planet tonight.

The acting was bad in ‘94. But the story—and the chances of an impact without warning—never go away.

This Guy Wants to Help You Download Your Brain

Imagine someone downloading your entire brain onto a USB stick, or whatever future storage device is thought up.. I guess there would be good aspects to this ability.. But come on, folks, this is pretty freaky for the future.

Now to be honest, I’d love to opportunity to be able to download the previous night’s dreams. But what if we dream up something that may be perceived as criminal? In a future world, will we be punished for the subconscious thoughts?

Yes indeed. Downloading the brain sure sounds fun. Until you think about some interesting consequences of such advanced actions..
