Two X-class solar flares in less than 2 hours, and more may come soon

As always, SPACEWEATHER.COM is a good source of information on whatever happens.. as is SOLARHAM.NET ..

The sleepy sun..

Is our sun falling asleep? The BBC asks that, and quotes a solar physicist of 30 years who says he never saw anything like what the sun is currently doing. Could there be a frost fair again on the Thames, as happened the last time the sun fell asleep during the 17th Century?

The active sun..

There have been 28 solar flares this week alone.

And more are most likely coming.

The active period of the sun’s 11 year cycle is now here..And that may mean absolutely nothing. Or something. It depends on the strength of the flare, of course.

Massive solar flare narrowly misses Earth, EMP disaster barely avoided

This was the closest of calls, and sort of compliments the story we have been worried about for days regarding the big hole in the sun..

This almost-flare took place two weeks ago. But yet we’re only learning about it today in the mainstream.

And it’s top story worthy.. in my opinion. But most people by the day’s end will still not know that our world may have been forever changed only a few days ago..

A part of the sun is missing..

Hear that?

The reason it is dark is because that chunk of the sun ripped off and blew away, and is not traveling to earth at 2 million miles per hour.

It’s happened before—but rarely this large of a chunk of the sun this big….. Although a bigger one could always happen, too..

Amazing.

This amazing video from NASA shows dancing tornadoes on the sun.. and when I see something like this it makes me realize that we, as humans, may think we understand everything but really, actually, understand next to nothing.

Champagne supernova in the sky. Is the sun going to go wild?

Just read a very interesting but unscientific article on a website claiming that the sun was getting whiter brighter an hotter than ever before.. There weren’t any findings within the text of the story that back up the author’s point of view but there were rather vague memories from when he was younger.. He recalls a time when the sun was more yellow and less heated, according to his generic recollection of events..

It’s an interesting thought, plus one that others have spoken about in recent years. There seems to be a fear that the sun is going super nova.. It’s the newest end of time end of the world conspiracy concern—and has little to no hardcore evidence backing up that theory..

But I traveled into my own memories … I recall, as well, a bright orange yellow sun. I remember hot days that were not oppressive.. Whether what the author of of ConspiracyHQ’s story believes is a real fear or not, my memory also had me thinking of a kinder and gentler period of time for weather on this planet..

So I’d be curious of thoughts from readers out there. Do you believe that memories can make a mind believe the past was better than it was or is the sun going wild and ready to burn a hole right through the planet earth?? I would love thoughts from all..

And for all the dads out there who like solar flares (me included) this one is for you

Geomagnetic storms are circling Earth’s poles in the wake of a double CME impact on June 16th.. Earth’s magnetic field has strongly compressed after the flares and impact.. After nightfall Saturday Northern Lights were visible even in the Northern United States such as North Dakota and Wisconsin..

There aren’t too many times I’d say I would like to live in North Dakota, but I saw some pictures on SpaceWeather and Facebook of the Northern Lights over North Dakota and it looked like absolute majesty in the sky.

There is beauty to solar flares.. until that day when a series of X flares knocks out power and modern life. But at least Northern Lights will be looking pretty amid the lack of technology.

A space weather forecaster is warning: A truly damaging solar storm could happen soon, and the world is not ready

Not ready at all!

A few people have said over the years I’ve don’t this site that there have been too many solar updates.. so many sunspots, so little time. And I have stood by my fascination and fear of the sun since day one.

Mike Hapgood’s conclusion makes me continue to fear the blast that do harm. Hope it never happens.. but people who stare at the sun long enough know it will.

Pretty cool stuff (and maybe scary if you’re a power grid)

The latest solar flare and CME.. heading towards us.

My fascination with the sun continues.. I am simply amazed with this video of a comet diving into the sun, followed by a massive CME

It forces the question: are these two events, seemingly separate, somehow linked.. Cause and effect. Did the comet equal the CME? Pure coincidence? Look through some recent history, this comet/CME type event happened July 5, 2011 too..

The boiling sun revealed

New video shows how the sun boils—and it’s a view that the human eye has never seen before

Amazing stuff, truly. A whole new perspective .. ..and a new thing to think about in relation to the ton of solar flares and CMEs that recently decided to emit from the big ball of light in our solar system..

And in a related story to the sun, check out this video of a comet hitting the sun.. and after a CME explodes out. Could it be that they are …linked?

An amazing flare fires off the sun .. M5.3 class.. earth directed.. Developing.

Question for science folks?

What scares you the most:

  1. Solar flares?

  2. Asteroids?

  3. Comets?

  4. The unknown

Just wondering.

For me, it’s probably solar fares… At least there’s the possibility we’d be hit with an asteroid by surprise, but a solar flare? …we got hours of knowledge before it strikes. The ‘knowing’ scares me more than the unknowns…
