This is where we are with Comet Ison tonight: We have never seen a comet behave like this

What we know: Not much yet.

We can guess, and some shots would appear that ISON is alive and well..or at least half alive and still moving.

Earlier today everyone, including NASA, pronounced this potentially historic comet dead. That does not seem to be the case as more analysis is done. Joshua Filmer of the site FROM QUAKES TO QUASARS wrote this tonight:

As I stated before, as the comet approached the Sun, something happened and ISON started to smear. It looked like the comet fizzed out before it even got started. Even if ISON disintegrated, scientists were suppose to see debris left over (which would be better for professional study, though not so good for amateur astronomy), but everything, the comet, the tail, everything, just vanished. Dean Pesnell, a project scientist with SDO summarized it most eloquently by saying “I’d like to know what happened to our half a mile of material that was going around the sun. Now’ it’s broken up and I didn’t see anything.”

Currently, material has reemerged from the other side of the Sun’s Corona. This is either a continuation of the tail that ISON left behind, or the comet itself. Current speculation is the dust that we see is simply dust, orbiting exactly as it should. The nucleus is probably lost.

It is pretty fascinating stuff—especially amazing to see so much disagreement still on what we are seeing having emerged from ISON’s encounter with the sun..

This tonight is, as as Phil Plait writes, a comet eager to confuse.

Hopefully definite answers are forthcoming..

Eyes on the sky. We may see a century event after all..

A tale of two Isons

There is conflicting information circulating today regarding the Comet of the Century, Ison.

On one hand, an expert named Stephen Lowry was quoted in the IB TIMES today saying that Ison is breaking up and may not survive its trip around the sun.. Lowry is a senior lecturer at the Centre for Astrophysics and Planetary Science School of Physical Sciences at the University of Kent Canterbury.. He told the publication that he does not think the comet will survive, commenting, “New reports show rapid decrease in gas emissions from the comet and a rapid increase in dust. Now these are early reports so we could be wrong. But for me personally I don’t think it’s likely to survive.”

And on the other hand…
A video update of Ison seems to paint a different picture..

Here it is for your enjoyment and knowledge:

We will see what occurs with this comet in a matter of days.
Tonight, CNN is reporting that the comet may be falling apart as it nears the sun..

The moment of truth comes on Thanksgiving.

The comet of the century!!!

So much for that. It appears that ISON may actually be breaking up and could potentially not make it around the sun intact.

So that big light show? Gone.

So now we are only left with three other comets if this occurs. The four horsemen of the apocalypse will potentially lose a rider

Ison: The comet of the century?

I place a question mark on the end of that headline because we just don’t know yet if it will be. Lots of stuff has to go right. And it still could go wrong.

If it does go right, though, there will be an amazing spectacle in our dark skies at night.. and maybe day.

Ison will rule the entire Northern Hemisphere ..
Maybe.

THE PINK STARS ARE FALLING. Or something is.

A spattering of fireball news for today:

'Fireballs' fall from the sky in Mexico.. reports that they caused nausea and headaches in rescuers in the Yucatan..

Was it ball lightning or something else?

Ison could still be the comet of the century. Or not.

And with all those government satellites not being monitored by anyone because of a shutdown, this happened: ISON passed by MARS on Tuesday..
