The move would make the women’s apparel chain the latest big-name retailer to be hurt by shoppers’ growing preference for online shopping and fast fashion.

RINGS around the past
Recently I was able to view the movie the RING with a few people.. one of those in the viewing party was someone born slightly before the original movie came out.. She had no idea what was scary about a VHS cassette tape. Probably didn’t even understand what a VHS tape even was. And even with the creepy nature of the movie the RING, and then visually appealing horror symbolism and dark colors presented in the film, the movie ended up not being very scary for her.
I realized then.. 13 years has really moved out society along quickly.
The things that were scary in the 90s were lampooned in the early 2000s by SCARY MOVIE.. the creepy gore films of the mid 2000s are old news. The new horror is visceral. It’s real. Gone are the campy films of teenage sex but here are the new modern days of birth defects, mental illness, war, and poverty. They are the themes of horror – the scary movies are just elements of the real fear of society.
I say all of this because there is a new movie coming out this year called RINGS. You can view it here:
You are looking at that right. It’s a sequel. Sequel-ish..
The description:
A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before
I am going to give this a chance.. It will be interesting to see how a video tape themed horror film will be changed and made modern for the new century.. A part of me actually thinks the original movie presents a problem for getting an audience in the new age. Kids of today, seriously, just don’t like the original RING. And that dislike and scorn because of the late 20th century technology in the RING could cause people to turn away from this movie just as easily.
Or .. they can pander to the modern age and made things really, really tech-centric. And then.. insult the 30 somethings like me who loved the RING when it originally came out.
I am really looking forward to this new M Night Shyamalan film coming out January 20 2017
Looks good.
Split (January 20)
In the middle of his career, M. Night Shyamalan abandoned his horror roots and started making movies for kids — The Last Airbender, After Earth — that weren’t up to his previous standards. It’s fine, everyone is allowed to go on a creative walkabout, but thankfully, Shyamalan returned to his roots with 2015’s The Visit, which confirmed that the director had not lost his masterful puzzle-box brain. Split is his next thriller, and it follows a man (James McAvoy) whose head is full of competing split personalities, all of whom work in the service of a dark beast that forces them to abduct a trio of teens. The great thing about Shyamalan is that he always swings big, and trusts his imagination. Keep a close watch on the strange and intriguing young talent Anya Taylor-Joy, who broke out in The Witch last year and continues to take offbeat genre roles.
I am also Night biased. I liked even Lady in the Water and the Village .. And my favorite movie perhaps of all time, SIGNS, was made by him as well..
SPLIT looks really really good.. I am thankful he continues to use his imagination..
I know I am in the minority as of late in the horror community.. they have virtually shunned Night..
I stuck with him.

The aftermath of a snowstorm (and blizzard along the Virginia coastline) .. places that don’t get snow much and don’t know what to do with it when they do, just got a lot..
Enjoy it … it will melt fast.
…and the snow deficit in my neck of the woods continues..
Dropping like flies from heroin in my home town
I have written about the coal region’s decline over the years.. I have also explored a bit about the drug epidemic in the area, as well. But not enough. That will change in 2017.. It is beyond a problem.. it is beyond a crisis.. it is a complete breakdown of certain societal functions that bond friends and families together in a community..
NBC NEWS has a special report about a place all too close to home.. Luzerne County Pennsylvania.. Where people are ‘dropping like flies’ from heroin.

Congrats to the Mid-Atlantic.. you are getting to enjoy a big snowstorm tonight. Perhaps the biggest of the year .. and maybe the only one the East Coast will see. See that blank part in Pennsylvania above you? That’s me.. that’s the snow-deficit location.. that’s the place that could have really used a nice good steady snowstorm tonight …
So enjoy the fact you got it.

So much for a good new year..
First of all, world, Happy Russian Christmas.. This was almost as special a day for me growing up as the Roman army version of the holiday.. we left our decorations up a little longer than the average family.. we shined them bright as can be on January 7 .. we celebrated the Ukrainian Rite of passage.. fun times. So for those who celebrate, or those who hack into email from Russia, Merry Christmas!
on… another .. note..
There has been some personal grief hitting my local area over the past few days. Someone I know from quite some time ago has lost someone very young and very important in his life.. Another person I know who just retired has succumbed to a heart issue..I see a few more tragic notes of traffic popping up on my Facebook feed..
This has been a little bit of a dismal start to the new year for me..
I know.. hope.. Be positive… Wipe away the sadness and replace it with the light of the world.
But that all gets to be a little more difficult than what some would like.
And when grief hits like a freight train, there is often no other choice but to be completely knocked out by it.
So I hope your new year is heading in a better direction than some people’s I know..
life is very, very, very short.. and for some people right now, they are having to bury a little life that was cut way too short.
I pray and send positive well wishes for anyone suffering or in a funk of some sort. There is help out there.. Google it if you need it. And sometimes the best thing, more than anything else, is human touch. A warm embrace. And a cold beer.
May God bless everyone who reads this and those who don’t.
Information being revealed about Ft. Lauderdale shooting suspect
The visit took place last November. The sources said Santiago told agents that US intelligence had infiltrated his mind and were forcing him to watch ISIS propaganda videos.
In addition, the sources told Fox that Santiago appeared agitated and incoherent during that interview, clearly indicating he was suffering from some kind of mental condition.
After the contact with Santiago, the FBI called local authorities who took custody of him and brought him to a local hospital for a welfare check.
Also being revealed tonight: The shooter told FBI that gov’t controlled his mind

Teen buys Arkansas weekly, starts newspaper anew
The coolest story of the year so far (so far) ..
Katie Jacques has been publisher of the weekly newspaper that serves Brinkley and Monroe County for 20 years – longer than the county’s newest newspaperman has been alive.
Jacques last week sold the assets of the Central Delta Argus-Sun to Hayden Taylor, 19, whose family’s roots in the county go back five generations. Taylor is a throwback to the time decades ago when a few young men his age ventured into owning newspapers, but it was rare then and is almost unheard of now in the age of the Internet.
Following a “Man Bites Dog” theme, Taylor has never taken a single course in journalism.
He said he’s not deterred by his lack of newspaper experience or journalism study, but will buy a few textbooks to read up on the subject. “I think I’m more concerned about management and administration, how to make the bottom line work,” he said.
A 2015 graduate of Marvell Academy, he attended Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge for a year and never decided on a major.
“I’ve always enjoyed reading, and I’ve done well in history and politics, economics and religion,” Taylor told a visitor recently. “All those interests line up with writing.”
This guy deserves a prize .. he is trashing the social media portions of the paper..
One portion of the Arkansas Online story that most interested me: "My friends think Facebook is where they can get ‘local news’, and I just don’t believe that,“ Taylor said. "That 'news’ isn’t always news, and it’s hardly ever really local.”
In my county, coal country USA, Schuylkill County PA, social media is actually quite dominant for people getting their new
Places like SKOOKNEWS.COM and the Skook News Facebook page are very popular..
nonetheless.. I wish this guy luck .. so amazing to think that in the 21st century NEWSPAPERS could become cool again
Quake swarm near the California-Mexico border
A swarm of more than 250 small earthquakes have struck since New Year’s Eve near the California-Mexico border, causing unease among residents and attention from scientists.
The strongest earthquake in the sequence was magnitude 3.9, striking directly underneath the town of Brawley, about 170 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
